St John's College

Accommodation

Accommodation at St John's is varied and full of character. Some of our buildings are historic, listed buildings while others are more modern and purpose built. All undergraduates are housed in buildings on the Bailey, with many enjoying views of the Cathedral or accross the River Wear.

All first year students live in the college and almost all second year students live out in privately owned accommodation (although in special circumstances, they may be housed in the College); any third and fourth year students are welcome to return.

Previously, roughly a third of first years shared rooms, however, now less thanone in five students will share a room. The College has been working to 'de-couple' as many student bedrooms as possible over recent years, but some of shared student rooms do remain. However, sharing a room can be great fun, and often those who have shared a room end up being best friends throughout their time in John's and beyond. A great deal of time and effort from College is put into matching up students who are likely to get on with one another, You can indicate whether or not you would be willing to share a room before the term begins.

Meet a student

The reason I love St John's College is that it functions like a family. Being a small community there is a unity between the years and across friendship groups, which helps to create a welcoming and friendly dynamic. There is something for everyone: with bountiful sports teams, societies, music groups and theatre companies, John's is a place where each individual is recognised and celebrated for what they bring to the table. The college itself is charming - an idyllic row of houses in prime location along the Bailey - it truly feels and looks like a home. I adore the sense of college spirt, and am honoured to be part of such a lively, diverse, yet close-knit community.
