St John's College

Prospective Students

The Principal's Welcome

David Wilkinson - Principal

Thank you for exploring St John’s College.

This is a College with a rich history but a place which looks to the future with excitement and imagination.

In this community the Fairtrade movement was founded and shaped by undergraduates. Here, the first women trained for ordination in the Anglican church. Here the opportunities and challenges of communication in a digital age are taken seriously.

It is a place next to Cathedral and Castle on a World Heritage Site. Yet our students and staff are involved in the diversity of the North East of England, in sport, music, theatre and serving local communities. Some use football as a way of helping young people resist drugs. Some travel to India to teach in schools. Some lead churches in deprived areas.

Most of all we are a community of respect, fun and learning. We aspire that all staff and students aim at excellence within the academic sphere. Undergraduates, postgraduates and those training to be church leaders achieve outstanding degrees. But we are also concerned about excellence in the whole person. Our sports teams achieve far beyond expectations. The Chapel Choir and Bailey Theatre Company have outstanding reputations. And we take diverse community seriously. We are a Christian college but open to all, looking to how all people can find a safe place that will allow them to grow, learn and make deep friendships.

We have also much to learn as a College and we will change in many ways in the coming years. We would love you to be part of this process. It is and will continue to be an exciting place to be.

Meet a student

The reason I love St John's College is that it functions like a family. Being a small community there is a unity between the years and across friendship groups, which helps to create a welcoming and friendly dynamic. There is something for everyone: with bountiful sports teams, societies, music groups and theatre companies, John's is a place where each individual is recognised and celebrated for what they bring to the table. The college itself is charming - an idyllic row of houses in prime location along the Bailey - it truly feels and looks like a home. I adore the sense of college spirt, and am honoured to be part of such a lively, diverse, yet close-knit community.

Meet a postgraduate

John's is a friendly, exciting and unique academic community to be a part of. Our recently refurbished accommodation is arguably the best on the Bailey. Weekly formal dinners are free and often followed by drinks in our famous "cellar bar" as a fun and quirky start to a great night with friends. Being small means that there is a fantastic social life and sense of community, yet we punch well above our weight in student societies and sport, regularly coming first in the inter-college "sports points per person" table. The inspiring and caring staff work tirelessly to support and challenge every student during their time here, ensuring that all "Johnians" think of university as a memorable and life changing experience.
