Statement from the Principal
(24 April 2019)
It is with great sadness that we learnt over Easter of the death of Milly Savill (nee Coulson) with her husband Toby. They were killed in a buggy crash on the Greek island of Santorini.
Milly was a student here at John’s and graduated in 2015. She was an outstanding theologian and was taught by the Principal in his course on science and theology where she excelled. She led the College CU and was captain of the Netball B team.
She taught at St Anne's Catholic primary school in Vauxhall. With her husband Toby, a graduate of Hild Bede in the same year, she had a strong Christian faith.
some words written by Milly have been published that she wrote in 2015-16
“Last May my Grandad died, and whilst this was of course very sad, I am so grateful for the time I had with him on the afternoon he died. All he wanted to talk about was what Christ had done for him and the importance of living a life in right relationship with God. Grandad was certain in the hope that he had in Jesus Christ, that his sins had been paid for and that he was soon to be with Christ in heaven. I realised that this was how I wanted to meet death. Not in fear or guilt but in dignity, in peace and in assurance that I was going to be raised with Christ in glory.
How wonderful it is that ‘God demonstrates his own love for us in this: ‘While we were still sinners, Christ died for us’. God paid a high price for me, and so I can say with certainty, like my Grandad, and like the apostle Paul, that ‘for me, to live is Christ and to die is gain’.”
The Principal comments,
‘As a community we remember with gratitude the lives of Milly and Toby and assure their family and friends of our thoughts and prayers. It was a joy to get to know Milly. She shared her love of life and love of Jesus with us and for that we are thankful.’
A funeral service for Toby and Milly will be held on Saturday 11 May 2019 at 10.00 am at St Mark’s Church Kennington and will be followed by a reception. All are welcome to come.
