St John's College

Alumnus and former Cranmer Hall Tutor appointed as Bishop of Sheffield

(10 April 2017)

The College is delighted to hear of the appointment of the Very Revd Pete Wilcox as the next Bishop of Sheffield.

Pete completed a degree in modern history here at John’s and would later return to serve as a team vicar in the Parish of Gateshead, while assisting in the training of ordinands at Cranmer Hall as Director of its Urban Mission Centre.

He met his wife, the novelist Catherine Fox here at John’s and their son Jon studied physics also at the College.

He and the Principal have been friends since their undergraduate days at Durham and the Principal has been Ecumenical Fellow at Liverpool Cathedral where Dr Wilcox has been Dean.

The Principal, David Wilkinson comments, ‘We are thrilled to hear of Pete’s appointment. At a difficult time he brings his unique gifts of evangelism, biblical teaching, pastoral heart and wise leadership to the diocese. His ministry is earthed in humility and an ability to hear the cry of those who are struggling. We assure him of our prayers and support’.
