Durham University

St John's College

Governance

St. John's College incorporates both John's Hall and Cranmer Hall and is a recognised College in the University of Durham. Students enjoy all the facilities and opportunities available within the University, and are awarded degrees by the University, but the College is an independent legal and financial entity: St John’s College Charity and Limited Company – Charity number 1141701 and Limited Company No 113496 (England and Wales) VAT No 334 6364 57.

The College is governed by a Council drawn from a wide spectrum of professions and locations; staff and student representatives are also elected to membership. Council members serve as non-executive company directors with overall management responsibility for the College, but this is largely delegated to the Principal, the Warden of Cranmer Hall, the Deputy Principal, the Director of Finance and Administration, and the Senior Tutor (the College Officers) who meet regularly as the senior management team. They report to College Council and its sub-committees which also exercise both advisory and consultative functions within the College.

"Ensuring great governance might seem really boring, but without it, everything else risks falling over (or worse!)."

Dr Jamie Harrison, Vice President of St John's College Council
