Kateryna Maltseva is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy. Dr Maltseva is a quantitatively oriented anthropologist who conducts research on the intersection of social and biomedical sciences. Her major interests focus on measuring the direct and mediated effects of the sociocultural and socioeconomic factors in individual health. Prior to joining the Department of Sociology at NaUKMA in Fall 2013, Dr Maltseva has taught and conducted research at the Department of Anthropology, University of Connecticut, Storrs, USA (2003-2013), where she has earned her second PhD. At UConn she has worked with Prof. Roy D’Andrade while majoring in Cognitive and Psychological Anthropology, with a concentration on quantitative methods and research design. Her doctoral dissertation research was carried out in southern Sweden in affiliation with Lund University. Dr Maltseva has completed a series of empirical research projects in Sweden, Ukraine and USA, exploring the associations between normative culture and mental and physiological health. After the war in Ukraine broke out in 2014, she turned her attention to the studies of stress and started exploring the causal pathways between psychosocial stressors and human condition. These links remain at the core of her current research. Her first book Cumulative effects of inequality and stress in human health came out in 2022. Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion in February 2022, Dr Maltseva has built several datasets documenting the effects of war-related stress on various dimensions of individual heath in Ukraine, as well as psychosocial factors that can serve as buffers against the destructive consequences of stress exposure. In 2022-2023 as part of the Ukrainian-Canadian research initiative “Developing the Global Academy: Piloting a Network-based Model of Research during War” joining social researchers from NaUKMA and the University of Toronto, Dr Maltseva was on the research team that has been studying the effects the war experiences have on health of the Ukrainian IDPs and refugees.   

As an IAS Fellow, Dr Maltseva will be joining efforts with her colleagues at Durham University working in psychological, sociological and anthropological directions of the project “Looking Back to Move Forward: History, Recovery, and Sustainability in Understanding the War in Ukraine on a Global Scale” (PIs: Dr Prokopovych and Dr Apostolidis), as well as collaborating with specialists in international peace and security at Durham Law School. Her recent work on stress exposure, coping and health outcomes in internally displaced individuals and refugees during war in Ukraine will be instrumental in developing the psychological trajectory of the project dealing with the individuals displaced by war and will help its interdisciplinarity development. Her ethnographic experience in the field will be a valuable asset to the project seeking to understand the consequences of the armed conflict in Ukraine.

 Kateryna Maltseva holds a PhD in Anthropology (University of Connecticut), PhD in Philosophy (NaUKMA), and MA and BA in Culture Studies (NaUKMA).
