Research Seminar: Trust and Relationship - Essential Elements to Enabling School Leaders to Cope in Complexity

27th May 2020, 13:00 to 14:00, Robyn Whittaker from Symphonia for South Africa

This will be a virtual seminar using Zoom. Contact ed.research@durham.ac.uk for details about how to take part.

Dr Robyn Whittaker is the Stakeholder Engagement Lead for Symphonia for South Africa, an organisation which has for a decade sought to mobilise active citizenship, foster cross-sectoral collaboration, and build social fabric around the critical issues facing South Africa. Partners for Possibility, as their flagship programme, focusses specifically on school leadership and education, and creating "Schools at the Centre of Community".

Partners for Possibility is a transformational leadership development programme, which partners business leaders with principals of under-resourced schools in co-action, co-learning thinking partnerships. Together they embark on an immersive and transformative leadership journey, to create a better future for children in South Africa. While the programme focusses specifically on leadership capacitation and support of the school principal, it has profound effects on the leadership qualities of the business leader as well. The programme has demonstrated marked impact in terms of improved school functionality, care for learners, and community engagement levels, as well as shifting the awareness of and commitment to nation building in the corporate sector.

In this discussion we will explore the key elements that enable resilience, creativity and the unleashing of transformational leadership capabilities within school principals, equipping them to lead in a deeply VUCA* environment, drawing from the experiences of the Partners for Possibility programme.
