A World of Opportunity - research at Durham University
Lectures and seminars
Professor Dame Julia Higgins, DBE, FRS, FRSC, FREng, Imperial College London.
As an experimental scientist, Professor Dame Julia Higgins has built her own apparatus to measure properties of materials, sent sample materials to another organisation and received data in return, supervised new young scientists starting their own research careers who come to her to discuss their measurements, and used large multi-user apparatus at international facilities where she has little or no control over the construction and maintenance.
Professor Brian Belcher, Royal Roads University, Canada will deliver this lecture. Research increasingly seeks to both generate knowledge and to contribute to real-world solutions, with strong emphasis on context and social engagement. As boundaries between disciplines are crossed, and as research engages more with stakeholders in complex systems, traditional academic definitions and criteria of research quality are no longer sufficient - there is a need for a parallel evolution of principles and criteria to define and evaluate research quality in a transdisciplinary research (TDR) context.
IAS Fellow's Public Lecture
Drawing on ethnographic research on processes of decentralization and infrastructural development in the Peruvian Andes, Professor Penny Harvey, University of Manchester, explores how divergent evidential forms, modes of reasoning and analytical procedures are managed to produce adequate grounds for action in the name of the public good.
