We analyse the scattering of sine-Gordon kinks and breathers
on a square
potential well. We show that when a kink is sent onto
the well, it can go through it, be trapped, or sometimes even bounce back
out of the well. For breathers, the situation is even more surprising as they
can pass through the well and exit with a
speed different, sometimes even larger, from the initial one.
Breathers can also
be trapped and very slowly decay inside the well or bounce in the well and
return to where they came from.
We also show that breathers can split into a kink
and an anti-kink pair when they hit the well.
