Numerical Analysis Seminars: Variational modeling of dislocations in crystals

Plastic deformation of crystals can be studied, under suitable loading conditions, with the tools of the vectorial calculus of variations. The multiplicity of phenomena and microstructures at different scales motivates the study of a variety of functionals, ranging from atomistic dislocation models to scale-invariant macroscopic crystal plasticity.
I shall introduce some of these variational models and discuss their relation, focusing on recent work on the rigorous derivation of a
macroscopic line-tension model for dilute dislocations from a microscopic elastic model within the framework of Gamma convergence.
