Topological Solitons Seminar: BPS Z_2 monopoles in N=2 super Yang-Mills theories

The so-called Z_n monopoles are important to understand the Goddard-Nuyts-Olive duality when the scalar field is not in the adjoint representation of the gauge group. On the other hand, the electromagnetic duality may be relevant for the colour confinement in QCD. In this talk we consider SU(n) Yang-Mills-Higgs theories spontaneously broken to Spin(n)/Z_2 by a scalar field in the direct product nxn. There is a monopole solution for each weight of the defining representation of the dual algebra so(n)/^vee. We obtain the fields in the whole space as well as the BPS limit for the so-called fundamental and non-fundamental Z_2 monopoles. We are also going to show how this model can be admitted by a class of N=2 supersymmetric theories and discuss some ideas related to dualities.
