Numerical Analysis Seminars: Vortex motion in thin magnetic films

The dynamic behaviour of magnetic materials is modelled by the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation, a hybrid between the harmonic map heat flow and a geometric Schrödinger equation. In certain nanoscale thin films, the typical state of the ferromagnet displays a vortex singularity. I will describe how to derive ODEs for the motion of this singularity from the PDEs describing the evolution of the magnetisation. This is based on joint works with C. Melcher (Aachen), R. Moser (Bath), and D. Spirn (Minnesota).
