Pure Maths Colloquium: Group automorphisms from a dynamical point of view

Presented by Tom Ward, Durham University

26 November 2012 16:00 in CM221

Automorphisms of compact metric groups are the simplest kind
of dynamical system, and one of the simplest things to try and do is classify them up to natural notions of equivalence. I will describe
some of the number-theoretical problems this throws up, and outline recent joint work with Baier, Jaidee and Stevens aimed at finding
continua in the classifying space.
