Numerical Analysis Seminars: Approximating the spectra of self-adjoint and dissipative operators

Presented by Marco Marletta, Cardiff University

2 March 2012 14:00 in CG83

I will consider differential operators which are singular in some sense, in particular differential
operators on infinite domains. With the help of Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps I will study the phenomenon of spectral pollution (or its absence) and how to push pollution out of the way when it does occur.

The talk is based mainly on a single-author paper in IMAJNA (2010) and a recent joint paper with
Rob Scheichl (to appear in J Spectral Theory).
