Numerical Analysis Seminars: Fluid mixing, Hardy Spaces and BMO

Presented by Djoko Wirosoetisno, Durham University

14 October 2011 14:00 in E101

We review the concept of passive scalar mixing by fluid flows
and how this can be measured by the H^{-1} norm. We then discuss the
applications to fluid dynamics of certain inequalities related to the
space of functions with Bounded Mean Oscillations (which is dual to
the Hardy space H^1). This is then used to obtain bounds on the
scalar mixing rate by 2d perfect fluid flows and on the growth of
vorticity gradients.
