Pure Maths Colloquium: Catenoids and Helicoids

Presented by "David Blair (Michigan State University, Michigan, USA)",

30 May 2002 00:00 in CM221

"We begin with some history and a few remarkable properties of these classical surfaces. We then give some generalizations
for hypersurfaces in higher dimensional Euclidean spaces. Turning to symplectic geometry, we discuss the Lagrangian
catenoid of I. Castro and F. Urbano in Cn. Finally we study Lagrangian submanifolds in Cn which are foliated by (n-1)-planes
and for n=2 introduce a family of ruled Lagrangian surfaces in C2 which can be thought of as ``Lagrangian helicoids''."

Unusual day: this is a Thursday.
