Topological Solitons Seminar: Nearly Kaehler manifolds and G_2-instantons

Presented by Derek Harland, Durham University

28 October 2009 14:15 in CM219

Around 25 years ago, generalisations of the anti-self-dual equations for a field strength tensor to dimensions greater than four were written down by Corrigan, Devchand, Fairlie and Nuyts. Many of these turned out to have interpretations as BPS equations in supersymmetric field theories; they have also been studied by mathematicians interested in topology of manifolds. After reviewing this material, I will discuss some new solutions of these equations on nearly Kaehler (and related) manifolds, which are potentially relevant to supergravity. No prior knowledge of nearly Kaehler geometry is assumed.
