Numerical Analysis Seminars: Finite Element Methods for the Advection-Diffusion Equation

The advection-diffusion equation has many applications in real physical problems and a lot of effort has been made by finite element practitioners to successfully model the behaviour of solutions. This presentation will be a short history of the development of two of the major approaches, namely the continuous and discontinuous finite element methods. Ongoing research by the author in collaboration with Cangiani, Georgoulis and Jensen into a combined continuous-discontinuous finite element method, giving the best characteristics of each, is also presented.
