The Durham Department of Mathematical Sciences Alumni Fund (DDMSAF) is supporting prestigious Research Summer Bursaries targetted at undergraduates who consider embarking on a research career and who have just finished their penultimate year of studies. These bursaries are highly competitive and provide an opportunity to participate in a research project lasting 6 to 8 weeks during the summer months and supervised by a member of staff of our Department. The awardees write a report at the end of the project that we make available on our webpages.
This scheme was launched in 2013, and our first awardee was Miss Ieva Kazlauskaite, now in her final year of the MMATH degree. Ieva spent eight weeks in the summer of 2013 working on a project entitled `Applied analysis of Lorenz equations’, supervised by Dr Djoko Wirosoetisno. She says:
`The summer research internship has been a valuable experience that not only deepened my understanding of a particular area of Mathematics but also gave me an opportunity to get to know a number of great people and to experience the day-to-day life of a researcher, and encouraged me to consider a career in academia. I am very grateful to those involved with the Durham Department of Mathematical Sciences Alumni Fund whose generous contributions made this possible.'
If you would like to contribute towards these bursaries, please follow this link to our donations page and select "Mathematical Sciences" from the drop-down "Designation" list, or send an email to Dr Anthony Yeates, the Chair of our Departmental Alumni Committee, at firstname.lastname@example.org.
