The Risk Masters started in 2010 and are growing in strength. For entry in 2012 - 2013 we had over 300 applications and this trend is continuing in the current admission round. For 2012 - 2013 and 2013 - 2014 we secured five prestigious bursaries from the Open Society Foundation. These were available to applicants from Afghanistan, Indonesia, Nepal and Palestine.

Graduates from the Masters Programmes in Risk are enjoying huge success at entering the job market and have gone on to a range of employment and career development opportunities including:

  • Jobs with leading environmental consultancy companies (Waterman Group, JBA, Halcrow, URS, Tiscali, Ambiental, Water-Value)
  • Fast Track Civil Service
  • Emergency Management Analyst in USA
  • Asset Management with Thames Water
  • Senior Geologist with National Space Research and Development Agency (Nigeria)
  • Funded PhD research in the Durham University and at the University of Saskatchewan
  • Researcher at the University of Munich
  • Hansard Scholar

Others students have gone on to jobs or further study not directly linked to their degree but drawing on the skills developed through the degree programme. Within the Masters Programmes we train students with methods and tools that they will come across working in the risk industry. Throughout the course we also provide opportunities to meet professionals working in risk. For instance we have had lectures from RMS and JBA when appropriate. We also try to link students with companies and organisations working in risk through Vocational Dissertations. Examples include projects with JBA, AIR, the EA, the Eden Rivers Trust, Water-Value and the Wear Rivers Trust. These experiences can help students stand out when applying for jobs.
