Christopher Moyes Memorial Foundation Studentship
Call for Applications
Applications are invited for a Studentship to support a suitably qualified postgraduate student for a three year PhD programme in Geography focused on research that helps to build resilience to hazards and risks challenging human societies in the global south.
One Christopher Moyes Memorial Foundation Studentship is available to start in the academic year 2018 - 2019. Applicants, who may be of any nationality, must possess a First or Upper Second Class degree, or equivalent in a relevant field of study. Applicants must demonstrate outstanding potential to undertake research at the highest level, as well as capacity and motivation to conduct research with strong potential to make a difference in society, especially for relatively low income populations in the Global South. Applicants must also meet with University requirements in English.
The successful candidate will register for a full-time PhD in the Geography Department at Durham University. The 3-year Studentship covers Durham University tuition fees, and an annual maintenance stipend of £14,000, payable in installments, to cover living costs and Middle Common Room (Postgraduate) membership fees for (Postgraduate) membership for a college. The Studentship will also include a separate element for costs of work in the field or laboratory work.
The Christopher Moyes Memorial Foundation was established in memory of Mr Christopher Moyes, OBE. At his untimely death in 2006, Chris was a leading figure in the British transport industry, Chief Executive of the transport company Go Ahead and Chairman of the Council of the University. The Foundation aims to support opportunities which Chris himself would have wished to support. This close link with the University is integral to the Foundation's aims and this Studentship will promote the partnership between the Foundation and the University.
The Studentship has been established with the following aims:
- The Studentship will support postgraduate PhD training and research which aims to have beneficial impacts for people living in the areas studied, as well as contributing to the Student's personal development
- The Studentship will be associated with the Department of Geography at Durham University where the PhD will be supervised. Candidates for the Studentship would also be eligible to apply if they are proposing cross-disciplinary projects requiring joint supervision by academic staff in Geography and other Departments at the University
- The Studentship will also be associated with the Institute of Hazard Risk and Resilience and the project will contribute to the work of the Institute to promote research that helps to build resilience to hazards and risks challenging human societies around the world. The Institute will support and promote the successful applicant's work in a way that will commemorate Christopher Moyes, as agreed with the Foundation Trustees

We invite suitable applicants to please follow the process below:
Applicants should follow all 4 steps:
Step 1. Prepare your application documents
- If you have not been in touch with the department before please see our pages for postgraduates and the information on staff in the department and their research interests. This will help you consider how your research may relate to expertise in the Department of Geography
- Complete the Studentship application form
- Compile other submission documents listed below under 'step 3', including academic references
Step 2. Make your studentship application to the Department of Geography
Step 3. Make your academic application to the University
All applicants must also make a formal academic application by 31st May, 2018 to the University using the University online application system.
To make the academic application you will need to have ready to submit the following documents:
- Your C.V. detailing their academic career and qualifications to date
- Copies of your academic certificates and transcripts
- If you are not a UK Citizen please provide proof of your proficiency in the English language
- Two academic references. Please note that it is the applicant's responsibility to request and obtain letters of reference
