Postdoctoral Research Associate - Ref: 3140

(20 March 2009)

The Department of Geography at Durham seeks to appoint a postdoctoral research associate as a diatom specialist to work on a NERC-funded project that is applying state-of-the-art palaeoenvironmental techniques to reconstruct sea level variability in the North Atlantic region during the last 500 years. The post is full time for two years and will commence on August 24th 2009.

The main academic goal of the project is to develop high-resolution proxy sea-level records spanning the last 500 years from around the North Atlantic region. By comparing these benchmark records we will test the hypothesis that sea-level accelerations during the past half-millennium are synchronous across the North Atlantic basin and therefore represent a significant climate signal that is related to melting of land-based polar ice. Our aim will be achieved by a programme of fieldwork and analyses of sediments collected in six coastal marshes (Connecticut, Maine, Nova Scotia, southern England, northern Germany and western Iceland).

Salary: From £30,594

Closing Date: 24th April 2009
