British Academy - Various Conference Grants

(4 March 2005)

These contribute to the travel expenses of individuals delivering a paper at a conference abroad. Grants are available for advanced researchers, at postdoctoral or equivalent level, in the fields of the humanities and the social sciences. Grants rarely exceed £800.

The British Academy invites applications for its British conference grants. Funds are available to assist with the costs of bringing key speakers from the UK or overseas to conferences held in the UK. Awards of between £500 and £2,000 are available.

The British Academy invites applications for its overseas conference block grants. Applications may be from learned societies or national subject associations in the humanities and social sciences to support attendance by a group of British scholars at a major international congress abroad. The society or association will allocate the individual grants to those delivering a paper. Grants are unlikely to exceed £10,000.

The British Academy invites applications for its worldwide congress grants. These are available for the congresses of major subject areas or disciplines in the humanities and social sciences, ordinarily occurring every three to five years, and involving an extensive programme and large attendance from all over the world. It should clearly be the British turn to host such a congress, and the event should not have been held in the UK for a considerable period. Up to £15,000 is available.
