Nuffield Foundation Social Sciences Schemes
(11 October 2004)
New Career Development Fellowship Scheme - early warning of changes
This Scheme aims to develop social science research capacity on issues of social importance. It provides awards for social scientists at the beginning of their research career to work in partnership with an experienced social scientist. Awards are for three years and cover salary and research costs.
The Foundation has run this Scheme foe five years and Trustees have now reviewed it and decided to run a revised Scheme for a further five years.
The main changes made to the scheme are:
That applications will be accepted only from those who have their PhD
The introduction of an ‘outline’ application stage
An increase in the maximum award limit to £150k
Increased support for the experienced partner
The first round for the revised Scheme will be in 2005. The expected closing date for outline applications is to be October 2004, and for full applications - for those short-listed - later in the 2004 or early in 2005. Decisions about the awards are to made in May 2005 at the latest. Detailed guidelines and application materials for the revised Scheme will be available from www.nuffieldfoundation.org during Summer 2004.
Small Grants Scheme in the Social Sciences
Grants are made for self-contained research projects, including pilot studies, to meet the cost of research assistance, research materials, data collection and analysis, and travel and subsistence in this country and overseas. The normal limit for awards has recently been increased to £7,500.00 and exceptionally awards may be up to £12,000.00. We aim to make decisions within three months, but it does sometimes take a little longer.
The Small Grants Scheme has no closing date and applications are accepted throughout the year. Application materials are amended each year and posted on www.nuffieldfoundation.org at the beginning of September.
