Post Doctoral Research Associate - Ref: 3281

(15 January 2014)

The Department of Geography at Durham University wishes to appoint a full-time Grade 7 post-doctoral research associate for 24 months from 1st May 2014 or thereafter, to work on a collaborative research project between the Universities of Birmingham, Durham, and UIUC (Illinois, USA) on a project entitled ‘The hydrodynamics of microbial landscapes’ funded by NERC. The aim of the project is to develop a quantitative numerical representation of flows at the micro-scale through permeable river beds and the interaction and the influence that biofilms have on the flow, through; i) collection, culture and quantification of biofilm structure; ii) laboratory flume experiments applying micro-particle image velocimetry (PIV) techniques; iii) the development of a novel high resolution numerical model which predicts biofilm-flow interaction; and iv) the scaling-up of the numerical model to enable an assessment of the effect of the drag associated with the dynamic moving biofilms on conveyance systems.
