Queer Geographies Reading Group

20th February 2019, 15:00, W007, Main Geography Building

For the group, we will be reading extracts from José Esteban Muñoz' Cruising Utopia: The Then and There of Queer Futurity (2009). Muñoz' project in the book is to encourage a break beyond a focus on the present in the LGBT+ agenda. Developing a 'part manifesto, part love-letter to the past and the future', Muñoz asserts that queerness is always-already unfinished, as a 'futurity bound phenomenon'.

In advance of the group, we circulate the book's introductory chapter 'Feeling Utopia', alongside a central chapter developing Muñoz' manifesto - 'The Future is in the Present: Sexual Avant-Gardes and the Performance of Utopia', alongside the volume's conclusion. We hope that these segments will provide a relatively straightforward and accessible 'way in' to thinking around queerness and queer theory, particularly for those who are unfamiliar with the school of thought.

The session will be relaxed and informal, with cake and conversation. Do please feel free to come along even if you don't get a chance to read the text.
