Teaching Fellow in Physical Geography (Fixed Term) Ref: 015768

The Geography department seeks to appoint a Teaching Fellow in the broad area of Sea Level science. We are interested in a broad range of topics including reconstructing sea level, coastal impacts, and modelling, and we encourage candidates with expertise in one or more of these areas to apply. This post offers an exciting opportunity to make a contribution to the delivery and development of the Department of Geography’s teaching and curriculum and the successful candidate will contribute broadly, particularly in (but not restricted to) the following areas:

1. Supporting the delivery of teaching in the physical geography degree programme by contributing to a selection of existing modules; including (for example) some of: Level 1 Introduction to Geographical Research; Level 1 Physical Geography; Level 2 Scientific Research; Reconstructing Environmental Change; Climate Change: Geographical Perspectives;Level 3: Sea Level Change and Coastal Evolution; Past Climates of the Low Latitudes; Level 4: Practical Skills in Sea Level Science. 2. Leading small group teaching acting as an academic advisor (Levels 1 and 2), research methods tutor (Level 2) and dissertation supervisor (Level 3). 3. Contributing to the administration of the teaching programme in the Department. 4. Assessing and examining student work. 5. Supervising undergraduate and masters-level dissertation students 6. Developing scholarship in the field, including the development of innovative teaching. 7. Membership of the Geography Board of Studies. The post holder may also have membership of some departmental committees and professional body membership

The post of Teaching Fellow will involve a significant teaching load, including during the summer period, and there may be related scholarship and the opportunity for administrative duties which relate to education and pedagogy. This post is to cover the teaching responsibilities of a colleague who is away from Durham. The candidate will report to the Head of Department, and work closely with the BSc degree programme director.

The post is for a fixed term only. It is available from 1 September 2018 and will end on 31 August 2019. It is not anticipated that the post will be extended beyond this fixed term.
