The Department of Geography Receives National Award for Progress in Advancing Gender Equality in Higher Education
(7 May 2018)
The Department of Geography has had an Athena Swan (Bronze) Award conferred by the Equality Challenge Unit. In 2014, the department was the first Geography department in the country to be awarded the Equality Charter Mark (ECM), following the introduction of the scheme for arts, humanities and social science disciplines In 2015 the Athena Swan charter was expanded to encompass the areas formerly recognised through the ECM as well as professional and support staff and trans staff and students, addressing gender equality more broadly.
Professor Mike Bentley, Head of Department, said: "We are delighted to have been awarded the Athena Swan Bronze Award. The award reflects our full commitment to embedding the values of the Athena Swan equality charter in our policies and practices for students and staff. This marks an important moment for the department as we consider how to continue the process of change, celebrating what we have achieved and challenging where there is still more to do".
