Norse in the North Annual Conference: Emotions and Mindsets in Old Norse Literature and Society

Lindisfarne Centre

The seventh annual Norse in the North Conference will be on the theme of Emotions and Mindsets in Old Norse Literature and Society.

The organisers of the conference request abstracts from postgraduate students (including MA, MPhil, MSt, and PhD students) for papers relating to the conference theme: ‘Emotions and Mindsets in Old Norse Literature and Society’. Norse in the North is an interdisciplinary project that has historically hosted speakers from various disciplines, including literary studies, history, archaeology, art history, mythological studies, and reception studies, and we welcome proposals from students working in any of these disciplines and further afield.

Our keynote speaker will be Dr Hannah Burrows (University of Aberdeen), who will be presenting her research on ‘Old Norse Poetry as a Mind-Altering Substance’. The theme may be interpreted in many different ways, and below are some suggestions for potential areas of investigation:

  • The relationship of emotions and actions
  • Legal, moral, and religious mindsets
  • Depictions of emotion in visual culture
  • The effects of gender on emotions and mindsets
  • Authorial, historiographical, and narrative mindsets
  • The modern reception of medieval emotions and mindsets

Abstracts should be no longer than 300 words and be suitable for a 20-minute presentation. Please email abstracts to by 21 March 2018. For more information about the conference and the Norse in the North project, please visit our website, our Facebook page and associated group, and our Twitter account. If you have any further questions or queries, please contact us at the above email address.

The conference organisers are Alexander Wilson and Katie Harling-Challis.
