Rethinking the Literary through Electronic Literature

24th January 2018, 16:30 to 18:00, Hallgarth House Seminar Room, Mario Aquilina

A staff and postgraduate research seminar, inviting us to reflect on what it means to produce 'literature' in a digital age. The time and venue for this seminar will be confirmed soon.

About this seminar

In this paper, I will discuss electronic literature ('born digital' literature or literature that depends on the affordances of the computer and computer networks) and some of the key aspects of its relation to literary tradition and the futures of literature. Moving from a brief contextualisation of electronic literature within the history or histories of literature, I will show some of the ways in which specific works of electronic literature challenge or recover specific concepts which we associate with humanist conceptions of the literary and of 'literature', thus urging us to rethink literariness in our time.

About Mario Aquilina

His first monograph, 'The Event of Style in Literature', was published by Palgrave Macmillan in September 2014. Among other projects, he has co-edited a special issue of CounterText (Edinburgh University Press) on 'Electronic Literature', published in August 2016.
