Establishing a Baseline of Children Starting School and Monitoring Progress in the First Year in Primary Schools of the Western Cape, South Africa

A research project of the School of Education.


Collaboration with Professor Sarah Howie, Centre for Evaluation and Assessment, University of Pretoria (now at the University of Stennenbosch)

The project is an extension of the international project ( which looks at children staring school around the world and at the progress that they make. 


The project is funded by the following grant.

  • Establishing A Baseline Of Children Starting School And Monitoring Progress In The First Year In Primary Schools Of The Western Cape, South Africa (£81868.13 from The Nuffield Foundation)


To establish what children know and can do in the western Cape when they start school and the progress that they make in their first year at school.
