Professor Santiago Fouz Hernández is hosting two Spanish Cinema events this September, in collaboration with the Instituto Cervantes Manchester and the London Spanish Film Festival.
On September 13, as part of a homage organised by the Instituto Cervantes to acclaimed Spanish filmmaker Icíar Bollaín (Flowers from Another World, Take my Eyes, Even the Rain) Fouz had a conversation and moderated a Q&A with the director at the Instituto’s Manchester headquarters, following the screening of The Olive Tree (2016). On September 21-24 and in collaboration with the London Spanish Film Festival and ‘Movies Are Dead’, Fouz Hernández and Betty Bigas will host the Bigas Luna Tribute London.
The London events include a screening of horror classic Anguish (1986) at 6.10pm in Prince Charles Cinema in central London (7, Leicester Pl,) (35mm, original English), introduced by ‘Movies are Dead’ founder Paul Martinovic. The full Iberian Portraits trilogy will be screened over the weekend at Ciné Lumière in South Kensington (17, Queensberry Pl) including Jamón jamón (1992) on Friday September 22 at 6.15pm with intro and Q&A with Fouz and Betty Bigas, Golden Balls (1993) on Saturday September 23 at 4.30pm with intro by Durham MLAC alumno Dr Matt Hilborn (now at Kings College London) and The Tit and the Moon (1994) on Sunday September 24 at 2.15pm, introduced by Fouz Hernández.
The events also include a small pop-up exhibition featuring the original inspiration boards for each of the films in the Iberian Portraits trilogy, created by Bigas Luna during the pre-production and production of the films in the early 1990s. The exhibition opening, directly after the screening on Jamón jamón on Friday September 22nd will include an Iberian ham reception (free with the film ticket), courtesy of Spanish Ham Master and Cervezas Alhambra. Since launching in San Francisco in 2015, the BIGAS LUNA TRIBUTE has visited 23 cities, attracting very large audiences and international media attention. The most recent event at American Cinematheque in Los Angeles earlier this year sold over 1000 tickets. More cities are confirmed for 2024 in Brazil and Italy.
The companion podcast (in Spanish) includes 2 seasons of 20 episodes each, featuring interviews with Bigas Luna specialists from across the world and members of the Spanish film industry that have worked in his films, including filmmakers, producers, set designers, film editors, sound mixers, actors, exhibitors, film programmers and more.
