Welcome to the Department of Engineering

Andrew GallantWell done for making it to Durham and particularly to Engineering! You will benefit from our general engineering approach which will provide you with a breadth of understanding across the engineering disciplines, as well as opportunities to specialise in later years. Our world-class engineering experts are constantly striving to develop and deliver content to prepare our graduates for the world outside. Engineers continue to be in high demand. They are problem solvers who are able to make advances in materials, design and efficiency that can lead to, for example, clean energy solutions, sustainable and resilient infrastructure, next generation communication networks and electronic systems. I wish you all the best for your time at Durham and I look forward to meeting as many of you as I can. Please do not hesitate to ask questions as you settle into Durham and your new life as an engineering undergraduate.

'Welcome to the Department and Durham! Although it may feel daunting, this is the start of a very exciting journey. My advice is to explore all the opportunities in front of you; take advantage of the resources the Department has to offer you; and don’t worry if you feel overwhelmed or are struggling, the Department and your college are there to support you. Good luck and Enjoy!'

Your first week in Durham – University Induction Week Events Timetable

The Timetable has been designed so College events don’t clash with any of your academic departmental events, but offer you lots of opportunities to meet your fellow Freshers, find your way around and settle into student life.

To help you keep track of where you need to be, and what you need to do during your first busy days at university, in your College and your Department, we have created a day-by-day University Induction Planner. This should help you to plan your schedule, so you don't miss anything - from being issued with your Campus Card or meeting the staff in your Department, to trying out for a sports team or joining a student society.
