Welcome to Durham University's Common Awards website

Election: CAMB Student Representatives

(8 September 2016)

The Common Awards Management Board provides oversight of the Common Awards programmes. The Board meets three times each year, with two meetings in Durham and one in London. At present, the Board includes representatives from Durham University, Ministry Division (including Theological Education Institutions [TEIs]), and one student representative.

In response to feedback, the Common Awards Management Board has agreed to increase the student representation on the Board to two student representatives. The Common Awards team at Durham University will be facilitating the election process.

Action: Students!

All Common Awards students are invited to nominate themselves for the election.

~ Are you interested in being one of the Common Awards student representatives?

~ Would you like to have a say in the ongoing monitoring and development of the Common Awards on a national level?

~ Would you like to represent your fellow students and contribute to Common Awards decision-making and policy development?

If so, please consider standing for election!

To stand for election, please complete this self-nomination form and return it to us by 30th September 2016.

Further information

We will reimburse travel and subsistence costs for student representatives, and we will provide advice and support to the representatives throughout the year.

We will publish candidate information in early October so that Common Awards students can vote for their student representatives.

If you have any questions about the position, or the process, please contact Elena Gorman, Quality Assurance Manager (

Proposed timetable

The proposed timeline for the 2016/17 election process is:

30.09.16: Candidates nominate themselves by this date

07.10.16: Candidate information is published on Durham’s Common Awards website and the election opens

31.10.16: The election closes. Each TEI counts its students’ votes

14.11.16: Each TEI returns its results to Durham’s Common Awards team

01.12.16: Durham’s Common Awards team announces the results of the election (please see the note at the end of this email)

Action for TEI staff

As Durham’s Common Awards Team does not have access to student emails, we would be grateful if TEI key contacts could circulate this information to their students on our behalf. We have been in touch with all TEI key contacts and we have sent them information to circulate to their students.

We would also be grateful if you could let us know who in your TEI will be responsible for collating the votes and returning the data to us (this might be your ‘key contact’ or a current student representative on your Management Committee). We would be more than happy to discuss this process with them directly, and to answer any questions they might have.

As always, please contact us if you have any questions:

Note on counting votes

The voting system that we will be using is not a simple one-member-one-vote process. What Management Board agreed was:

'that an election process would be held at each TEI individually for students to vote for the candidates on the Common Awards website. Following their election process, each TEI would then provide the Common Awards Team with a list of all candidates who received votes in ranked order … [and] that once ranked preferences had been received from each TEI, the Common Awards Team would use a Single Transferable Vote system to identify the two candidates with the highest number of votes across all TEIs, by counting up first preference votes and removing the lowest ranked candidates and distributing those votes according to second preferences, continuing until two candidates had over one third of the votes each.’
