When I first used the Angels scheme I genuinely didn't expect to receive as much help as I was given and I still cannot believe how useful the scheme has been. Not only would I recommend the scheme to other students, but I would point out that due to the huge amount of competition there is in the job market, you'd be a fool not to take advantage of such an amazing scheme.Kyle McManus, Butler 3rd year Historian
The Butler Angels scheme allows current students to get in touch with Josephine Butler College alumni to enquire about career options and applications. The website is fantastic, and allows current students to log in and filter though professions of a large number of Butler alumni. The site then allows the students to get directly in touch with someone whose career path seems relevant to their own thoughts and plans.
If you are a Butler alumnus who is not yet an Angel, please do sign up and help current Butler students in this difficult careers climate. You can easily do so on the Butler Angels website (www.dur.ac.uk/butler.angels).
ALUMNI CAREERS TALKS
We have had many alumni come back to the College to give talks on their careers to current students. These events have been very informal and have been of great benefit to our current students. We hope to build strong careers networks through our alumni community. If you or your company might be interested in sending you back to Butler to attend an informal careers discussion, please get in touch by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
Interview with Kyle McManus (2009-2012) about Butler Angels
What do you think of the Butler Angels scheme?
I think the Angels scheme is a brilliant idea. Not only does it provide current students an amazing opportunity to network and gain advice but it also extends the Butler community outside of the Durham Bubble.
How did the Angels help you?
Through the Angels scheme, not only was I able to learn about companies from the horse's mouth but I was also able to gain fantastic information about the companies' application process (ie, what competencies they are looking for, the kind of questions they will ask, etc.) and current business and internal news only accessible to current employees. This is unbelievably useful, as in most interviews you will be assessed on knowledge of the company you have applied for. It was through the Angels scheme that I was able to gain inside information and news about the company that looked impressive in the eyes of the assessor. I was able to apply information I had learned to demonstrate that I had not only done my research but I had the ability to successfully network (a competency highly admired by employers).
How easy did you find it to contact an Angel?
It is very easy. Everyone who signs up for the Angels scheme is eager to help, and all it took was one email and I had the information I needed.
Would you recommend the Angels scheme to other students?
When I first used the Angels scheme I genuinely didn't expect to receive as much help as I was given and I still cannot believe how useful the scheme has been. Not only would I recommend the scheme to other students, but I would point out that due to the huge amount of competition there is in the job market, you would be a fool not to take advantage of such an amazing scheme.
Do you have anything else to add?
I would like to thank everyone who has taken part in the Angels scheme, and I would encourage all Butler finalists and graduates to sign up! Not only is it a good way to keep up to date with the College, but it is also an excellent opportunity to assist fellow Butlerites who might need that helping hand.
