Durham University

Department of Archaeology

Welcome message from the Head of Department

Thank you for your application to study at Durham University. Our Department is one of the leading departments of archaeology in the world, offering an outstanding range of research and teaching expertise within a thriving archaeological community of over 250 undergraduates, 31 academic staff, 15 postdoctoral researchers and over 200 postgraduate students.

Archaeology at Durham has built a tradition of excellence in teaching and research over the last 50 years. This was confirmed by our score in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, where we were rated the top Department in the UK. The Department is also rated as one of the top five archaeology departments in the world (QS rating 2016), and as one of the top two archaeology departments in the UK for teaching and research (Guardian University Guide 2016, Times and Sunday Times University Guide 2016 and the Complete University Guide 2016), with some of the highest graduate employment rates in the UK sector.

Our teaching and research is global, and ranges from the Palaeolithic to the post-Medieval, from Iceland to India, from architecture to ancient DNA. We are also active in the north of England through our research projects and through our commercial field unit, Archaeological Services Durham University, who provide consultancy and specialist services. We invite you to have a look through our web site to get a feel for the range and diversity of teaching and research undertaking in our Department. It will give you a flavour of what to expect from Durham. I hope to welcome you to the Department in October, and good luck with any exams you are taking in the near future.

With best wishes,

Robin Skeates
