Department of Archaeology

In Memoriam: Tom Middlemass

The department is sad to announce the death of Tom Middlemas. Tom joined the Department of Archaeology in 1970 having worked previously in the North East police. He supported the department as its photographer, working on numerous projects, but making an especial contribution to The Corpus of Anglo-Saxon Stone Sculpture. He travelled widely producing many of the fine photographic images that now define this landmark project and its volumes. In the accompanying picture, he is shown with Wilf Dodds (left) and Alan Wiper (right), examining a rough out of a cross near Bewcastle, a famous photograph which appeared in Volume II of the Corpus. Tom left the department after its move to South Road and remained keenly interested in his retirement in archaeology and photography.
