Biography

Dr David González Álvarez got his PhD in January 2016 at the Department of Prehistory, Complutense University of Madrid (UCM), where he completed his doctoral research stage thanks to a FPU fellowship (2009-2013), after graduating in History (2007) at the University of Oviedo. At the UCM he was also honorary fellow, getting valuable teaching experience. Currently, he is a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Heritage Sciences (Incipit), CSIC in Santiago de Compostela, after being awarded with a postdoctoral research contract by the Galician regional government (June 2016-June 2019). During the first two years of this position he is conducting research and teaching at the Department of Archaeology, Durham University (UK) as Visiting Research Fellow, reinforcing his international links in this world-leading institution for archaeological research.

Research

His research focuses on the biographies of cultural landscapes in the Cantabrian Mountains (NW Iberia) between the Neolithic and the Roman period combining the integrated study of archaeological, palaeoenvironmental and ethnographic datasets. He is an archaeologist with a strong background in fieldwork –both in academic and commercial-led excavations– including the direction of several field projects, the coordination of interdisciplinary research teams, and the mediation with local stakeholders through public engagement programs. Additionally, his research explores the potential of archaeology and long-term narratives on cultural landscapes for informing policy-making on tourism, heritage and land-use management. He also studies public participation in Heritage governance of natural parks in mountainous areas aiming to build strategies for overtake the natural/cultural divide in the public perceptions about landscapes. In addition to his involvement as a team member of research projects related to Landscape Archaeology, Late Prehistory and Public Archaeology, he has also proved his maturity in archaeological research leading his own field projects in upland areas of the Cantabrian Mountains in order to understand the earlier anthropization of the alpine and subalpine zones in this area, to assess the impact on the landscape produced by the fully sedentarization of the human groups during the Iron Age, or to recognize the influence of the Roman conquest in the exploitation of the uplands.

As a result of his research, Dr González Álvarez has published more than 30 book chapters and 35 articles in journals of Archaeology, Anthropology and Heritage studies; he also gave more than 70 papers at conferences, seminars and lectures. A substantial portion of his production shows the international scope of his research, considering the noticeable weight of international publications and conferences presentations. He has also been visiting scholar in British (Durham and Cardiff) and American universities (Stanford) during his doctoral and postdoctoral stages, and he has taught Late Prehistory, Landscape Archaeology and Ethnoarchaeology to undergraduate students at the UCM and Durham University, and Theoretical Archaeology to master students at the University of Santiago de Compostela.
