Dr Maurice Said
I received my BA and MA degrees in Anthropology from the University of Malta. My Masters research involved 6months of fieldwork in southern Sri Lanka looking at the effects of aid and NGO development, and their projects, on communities of fishermen, dealing particularly with localised notions of vulnerability and development.
My current PhD fieldwork looks at the strategies coastal communities in southern Sri Lanka have developed to deal with the transformations brought about by post-tsunami development. In particular I explore the long term effects of post-disaster rehabilitation in changing social relationships and social structures, and the resultant reorganisation of space. The project is thus intended to be a discourse of localised strategies for coping with crises.
