Administrative Charges for Examinations

Initial Degrees and Diplomas and Higher Degrees

No examination fee is payable for the first written examination attempt, the first submission of a thesis or the first submission of a musical exercise.

Continuation Fee

Continuation fees are payable by all postgraduate research students who have completed course requirements for particular Higher Degrees or Diplomas but who still have to submit theses or dissertations or to enter for written examinations to complete examination requirements, in order to maintain registration for the Degree/Diploma concerned.

Continuation fees for MBA by distance learning:

  • Maximum 25% of fee for relevant stage.

Continuation fees for all other postgraduate courses:

  • 10% of the home full-time postgraduate student fee charged by the Research Councils (rounded to the nearest £5) for the first 12 months (£420 for 17/18 ).
  • Please note during the first 12 months, 0-3 months are charged at zero with the full 10% continuation fee charged for the period 3-12 months, i.e. there is a 3 month 'grace period' before any fee is charged.
  • 15% (rounded to the nearest £5) for any subsequent years on continuation (£630 for 17/18).
  • Students requiring an extension to the period of continuation to more than 12 months on medical grounds may apply to the Academic Support Office for an exemption from the increased continuation fee of 15%.

Tuition fee deposits for postgraduate taught programmes

International students

All self-funding students classified as international (according to EU regulations) will be required to pay a tuition fee deposit. The purpose for this deposit is to help demonstrate that you have the finances required in order for you to enter the UK to study. This information is given within your CAS documentation which is presented to UKVI when applying for a British visa. Deposits are only taken once an offer is made and accepted. The deposit you pay will be credited to your account with the University and so reduce the amount that you will have to pay when you are here at Durham.

The standard tuition fee deposit for postgraduate taught programmes is £1,000 with the following exceptions:-

Durham University Business School - £2,000 (for Masters programmes but not MBA)

Home and EU Students

Only the following departments require tuition fee deposits for Home/EU students:-

Department of Archaeology - £500

Durham University Busines School - £500 (both Masters and MBA programmes)
