Durham University Fund for Students Travelling Abroad
The funds are provided to support students wishing to travel abroad to undertake activities which sit outside their academic course and current area of study, for example, working for a charitable organisation, taking part in activities which enhance personal development and/or provide opportunities to gain personal experience. Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate an ability to organise their own travel.
The British and Foreign School Society (Sarah Walker and Spafford Memorial Fund) and the Durham University Student Opportunities Fund are major benefactors of the Fund which, during the academic year 2016-17, made average awards of £300 to successful applicants.
The British and Foreign School Society have a number of projects across the world, funding from the charity will be prioritised to those students who join or visit one of these projects.

A significant amount of the funding available to students to support their extra-curricular interests and personal development has been made possible from the generous donations of the University's Alumni. To ensure that this support continues in the future current students are needed to work on the Annual Giving Programme telephone fundraising campaign. If you would be interested in giving your time to help future students and in return gain some valuable experience as well as financial incentives, please contact the Development and Alumni Relations Office. I wouldn't have been able to go to Uganda and have this amazing experience if it hadn't been for the Students Travelling Abroad Fund. Volunteering in Uganda was the best thing I have ever done and I would highly recommend anyone who has thought about volunteering, at home or abroad, to do it!Rebecca Lowe, BA History
