The Batey Scholarship

The Batey Scholarship will provide an annual scholarship to three students in need of financial assistance. This scholarship is available thanks to a very generous donation by Mr John Batey and will enable Durham University to award three scholarships per annum of at least £2,500.

This Scholarship complements the existing work that the University is undertaking to attract talented students from the region to study at Durham.

  • The Batey Scholarship will provide three scholarships annually to students in need of financial assistance
  • Applicants should be resident in the UK, and be identified as 'Home' fees for University tuition fee purposes, at the point of submitting an academic application through UCAS for a place at Durham University
  • Preference will be given to students from the North East.
  • Educated at a state-maintained school, college or other secondary education provider

Prospective applicants must:

  • Stage 1: submit an academic application to Durham University via UCAS prior to the scholarship deadline (26th April 2019)
  • Stage 2:

Submit the following by the agreed submission date (26th April 2019)

    • an online scholarship application including a personal statement of no more than 1,000 words describing; your financial circumstances, how the Batey Scholarship would help you to study at Durham University and why you want to study at Durham University
    • a character reference from one of your teachers in support of your scholarship application to be sent with your application form. Please ensure your referee submits the reference on letter headed paper which contains their name, position (e.g. teacher or employer), contact details and your full name.
    • a copy of your Student Finance England assessment letter detailing your maintenance loan entitlement to be sent by email to . (If you are waiting for confirmation of your entitlement please submit your scholarship application and forward details of your assessment letter as soon as you can)

  • All eligible applications will be considered on the basis of their personal statements, reference and academic status by senior academic staff at Durham University.
  • Other scholarship awards may also be taken into account when considering the allocation of the scholarship (e.g. if you are eligibile for multiple scholarships you may apply for them but you will only be awarded one).
