Aims

  • To develop an appreciation of the role of financial information in the context of companies.
  • To develop an understanding of company financial statements.
  • To develop an appreciation of aspects of management accounting and its role in supporting the effective financial management of a business.

  • Structure and analysis of company financial statements
  • Performance measurement, including environmental and social aspects
  • Working capital management
  • Cost Volume Profit Analysis
  • Budgetary planning and control
  • Appraisal of capital investment projects

Learning Outcomes

Subject-specific Knowledge:

  • Have a basic understanding of company financial statements
  • Have an understanding of non-financial performance measurement
  • Have an appreciation of the uses and value of internal financial information in the management of a business
  • Have an appreciation of how companies are financed and how simple capital investment projects are appraised

  • Be able to interpret company financial statements and evaluate financial performance
  • Be able to interpret non-financial performance indicators
  • Be able to apply selected management accounting techniques in simple scenarios

Modes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment and how these contribute to the learning outcomes of the module

  • Learning takes place through attendance at, preparation for and participation in workshops, and private study.
  • Formative assessment is by means of on-line tests comprising of short multiple/multiple choice questions.
  • Summative assessment is by means of an in-term online test comprising of short/multiple choice questions and a written assignment to test students' knowledge and understanding of the subject-matter.
