Astonish the World Conference 2020

Striking, stupefying, shocking: how does your research astonish the world? Stephenson College invites postgraduate researchers, master’s students, early career researchers and staff members at Durham University to present on topics that astound, alarm and astonish, with the opportunity to have their papers published. We encourage creative and wide-ranging approaches to the concept of astounding the world through the exploration of different fields of research. This interdisciplinary conference hopes to attract scholars working in STEM, Social Sciences, and Arts and Humanities across a variety of fields whilst covering a range of periods and across different national contexts.


Deadline for proposals: 31 March 2020

Submissions are welcomed across a range of topics and questions including, but not limited to:

  • Eye-opening world issues
  • Surprising discoveries
  • New research developments
  • Striking historical events
  • Art/literature/film that stuns, shocks or stirs
  • Real or fictional people that are outstanding, inspiring or alarming
  • Innovative designs and inventions

Abstracts of no more than 250 words should be sent, by the 31 March 2020. Papers will be approximately 15 minutes. Please state a preference for either a spoken or poster presentation.
