Mr Ryan Mackey

Member of the Department of Music


The Rt. Revd. Ryan Mackey is a doctoral student in the Music Department. His wider research interests look at the intersection of music, theology, and technology, and ecumenism and the convergence of the historic traditions and practices of the Church. 

Prior to coming to Durham, Ryan served as a full-time instructor of music and adjunct instructor of ministry and theology at Central Christian College of Kansas (USA). He has presented at conferences in the USA and England on topics such as the evaluation of electronic music, the integration of electronic and sacred music, and the convergence movement. Additionally, Ryan serves as Auxiliary Bishop to the Presiding for the Communion of Evangelical Episcopal Churches (CEEC) and is a member of the House of Bishops for CEEC-Province USA

Ryan’s current research looks at the impact of technology and the concepts of liveness on contemporary Christian worship and devotional music. He is supervised by Professor Bennett Zon. 

Ryan has earned an AA from Central Christian College of Kansas (1999), a BA in Music (2001) and Philosophy/Religion (2004) from McPherson College, a MA in Christian Ministry from Friends University (2009), a MM in History/Literature from Wichita State University (2015), and a MA in Musicology (Music Theology) from Durham University (2020).
