In this video the Principal of South College, Professor Tim Luckhurst, will introduce you to South College. He describes the college motto and crest and the values of South. You will also have the chance to see some pictures of the college and our facilities, which Professor Luckhurst describes in detail.

South College is truly distinctive. As Durham’s first new college since 2006, it is a modern college in a historic university. This gives South the benefits of tradition and innovation. It is an inspiring combination.

Already, South has inherited the best of Durham's collegiate tradition and the opportunity to create new traditions of its own. The College has everything you expect of Durham and the ambition to contribute more.

Its first students have already started to make South feel welcoming, fun and inspiring. They are passionate about the values expressed in our college motto, 'Libertas, Aequalitas, Civitas Totius Mundi' - in English 'Freedom, Equality and Global Citizenship'.

Freedom refers to the College's commitment to freedom of thought, speech and debate. Equality stresses South College's commitment to inclusion and diversity. Global Citizenship emphasises the College's determination to welcome students and staff from all countries and continents and its concern for the future of our planet.

And South College doesn't only have a great motto. It has a superb logo too - one that includes our college mascot: the owl. Owls live in the woods around the college. They are also associated with wisdom, which we hope to cultivate and share.

Of course, as a thoroughly modern college, South also has some of the finest accommodation, social and sporting facilities in the country. We have a superb café-bar, state of the art drama and music rooms and an outstanding gym and games area.

Our dining room in The Hub will host our weekly formal dinners. The study space and common rooms in our Pitcairn Building are located alongside the offices of the College staff, providing immediate access to guidance and support available 24/7. And, of course, South College’s study bedrooms and student kitchens are simply the best.

South College offers the full range of opportunities that make studying at Durham so exciting and rewarding. Our sports clubs, music and theatre societies are ready to make their mark on this fantastic university. We have excellent volunteering schemes and we engage actively with our local community. The democratic system of student representation in which we take great pride is up and running.

So, South has embraced the best of Durham University. And, if you join us, you will have the chance to help your college grow and invent more of its own distinctive traditions.

We hope our site will help you to understand South College’s buildings, services and ambitions. We encourage you to apply to Durham University and we hope that you will choose South College. It is a great place in which to make friends and enjoy some of the best days of your life.

With warm best wishes from the Staff and Students of South College.
