Durham University

South College

Senior Common Room

The Senior Common Room exists to support the staff and students of South College by bringing together members from across the University and the local community. By joining the SCR you agree to support the College and to take an active interest in the life of the community. Our community is one of freedom, equality and global citizenship and as senior members of this community we want our SCR to actively demonstrate these values. In return we can offer you the opportunity to join Durham’s newest College with facilities and events only matched by our passion and belief in the people who make up our College family. You will have the ability to sign up for College events, including balls, College Day and our weekly formals. Communal dining is an important experience at South College and we would encourage you to join us. You may also decide to become a mentor and become more actively involved in supporting our students. Please note some events will, in the short term, be affected by Covid-19. It is still our intention to have a rich and vibrant year of SCR activity as part of the College calendar. We can assure you that being a member of South College SCR will be rewarding, intellectually stimulating and a great deal of fun.

SCR Levy

There is annual subscription of £20. There is a 50% discount for College Mentors.

Joining the Senior Common Room

Whilst we are setting up our SCR, applications to join the Senior Common Room must be made directly to the Principal, Professor Tim Luckhurst. Our Senior Common Room is open to anyone who wishes to support the College and its mission. Whilst we warmly welcome any member of Durham University staff to join, we are also interested in connecting with those not directly associated with the University, particularly individuals and groups from the local community. Whilst we are a scholarly community you do not need an academic qualification to join us, and we welcome people from all backgrounds.

If you would like to find out more about the Senior Common Room please feel free to contact the Vice-Principal, Lee Worden, for more information at
