South College

About Us

South College is the 17th College of Durham University.

South College is so much more than a great place to live. It is a living community in which to make friends, enjoy some of the best days of your life and work together on projects and ideas. Our Pioneer Scholars, students who have volunteered to join South from Colleges across the University, are ready to welcome you and help you to make the most of life at Durham.

South College offers you the chance to be part of something truly special. The College is ambitious and determined to contribute to the life of the University in every possible way. Its ideals are based on the principles of liberty, freedom of speech, equality and global friendship which are expressed in the College motto. South College's staff and students take great pride in the historic University of which we are part.

As Durham’s first new College since 2006, we offer a liberating combination of tradition and modernity. Already, South has inherited the magic of Durham’s collegiate history and added a dash of twenty first century inclusivity. South has everything you expect of Durham and the ambition to contribute more.

From the moment you arrive, your College will offer all the opportunities that make Durham special. Our sports clubs, music and theatre societies are ready to make their mark on this fantastic University. Our wonderful facilities in the Pitcairn Building and the Hub make these ambitions more than realistic. We have already agreed one volunteering scheme and we are determined to engage actively with the local community of which we are part.

The democratic system of student representation through the JCR, in which we take great pride, is simply waiting for your participation. South has embraced the best of Durham University. We will host weekly formal dinners. College and University will offer access to guidance and support 24/7. You will have the chance to help your College invent distinctive new traditions.
