Sport and Exercise Sciences
Welcome to Durham University Sport and Exercise Sciences. We have an outstanding reputation for pedagogy, blended with innovative and applied research across the natural and social sciences. Our current academic team is composed of psychologists, physiologists, sociologists and political scientists and is currently part of the School of Applied Social Sciences. From August 2018 however this academic group will form the first Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences at Durham University.
Our multi-disciplinary BA (Hons) Sport, Exercise and Physical Activity (SEPA) degree was ranked top in the UK in the Complete University Guide in 2015, and has not been outside of the top 6 in the last 6 years. These rankings reflect our sector-wide reputation for high quality and innovative undergraduate delivery and we will add a new BSc in Sport and Exercise Science to our undergraduate provision from October 2019. Our students also have fantastic opportunities to be heavily involved in high performance, college and community sport programmes run by our colleagues in Team Durham, and have frequently been recognized as Team Durham ‘Volunteers of the Year’.
Our ongoing development of our undergraduate curriculum reflects the growing diversity of research expertise among the academic staff who work closely with local, national and international organisations to inform policy and practice in terms of sport and community development, athlete training and welfare, health promotion, and addressing issues of inequality in these domains. Staff have a strong record of recruiting post-graduate students, a number of whom have acquired ESRC and AHRC research council studentship funding. In 2017, there are 16 full-time postgraduate students undertaking sport-related research.
