Caroline is Programme Director for the MA Social Research Methods Programmes, and a Senior Fellow of the HEA. She joined the School of Applied Social Sciences at Durham in August 2014 having previously been employed by Northumbria University (2004-2014), latterly as Principal Lecturer and Director of Undergraduate and Postgraduate Programmes within the Department of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation. She has a BSc. in Human Biology with Philosophy from the University of Hertfordshire, MSc. in Sport, Health and Exercise from Staffordshire University and was awarded her PhD in 2005 from the University of Exeter. During her time at Exeter, Caroline was based in the Children’s Health and Exercise Research Centre, where her doctoral research into energy intake and appetite responses to exercise in girls was supervised by Dr Joanne Welsman and Professor Neil Armstrong.

Caroline is interested in energy regulation and weight management from both physical activity and dietary perspectives, in particular the interaction of these key factors. Her research follows two themes: firstly the relationship between exercise-induced energy expenditure, energy intake and appetite parameters in children and adolescents, and secondly robust development and evaluation of regional physical activity and health improvement programmes. Her work has been published in a number of key academic journals and she has presented findings at both national and international conferences.

Caroline is a member of the Association for the Study of Obesity, the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences and is an Associate Member of the North-East UKCRC virtual research centre ‘Fuse’ (the Centre for Translational Research into Public Health), where she sits on the physical activity working group.
